07/09/2021

In France, a child is reported missing every 10 minutes, and in 90% of cases, the reason for the declaration of death is a fugue. In 2020, 39 587 reports of fugues of minors have been identified by the Ministry of the Interior.

Each year, the team of the 116 000 Missing Children, made up of lawyers, psychologists and social workers, accompanied by thousands of families whose child has disappeared. This experience brings an expertise on the issues and dangers related to the disappearances, in particular in respect of the fugues.

If teenagers often consider the fugue as an act of freedom without assessing all the risks, situations of vulnerability in which they may find themselves subject to much violence, crime, or to various forms of exploitation. These situations are often accompanied by other at-risk behaviours such as the consumption of alcohol or narcotics.

This observation has fueled the desire of the 116 000 Missing Children create the SAFE project, to support teens and families to raise awareness of the risks related to the fugue, and the support at the back of it. The project is supported by the Region Ile-de-France and the Fondation de France.

Project SAFE'sbuilt around three axes : the school-based prevention, thesupport of families and youth, and supporting the return of fugue.
